A Russian–English Glossary from the CAPIF Record
The research behind The Wires of the Steppe left the collection a serendipitous by-product: a Russian–English glossary of interconnection vocabulary, built from the CAPIF record itself. The collection holds 89 talks from the first four CAPIF meetings with two spoken tracks, the speaker’s Russian from the floor and the English of the interpretation booth. Aligning the two tracks in short time windows, and checking each pairing against the speaker’s slides, produced 4,299 scored candidate pairs. An editorial pass reduced them to 218 curated entries.
Each entry carries its evidence: how often the pairing was attested, in how many talks and meetings, whether it appeared written on a slide, and one moment in a recording where it can be heard. Some entries record where the interpretation drifted: the booth sometimes rendered трафик as “network”, and the glossary gives “traffic”. Where the record had no evidence, no entry was made: 2G, for example, never occurs. The pairs come from speech recognition on both tracks, so they are useful in aggregate and any single line should be checked against the recording.
